Saint Andrew was a fisherman and also one
of the twelve disciples chosen by Jesus. He was crucified on a cross in the
shape of an X, the Saltire. The Picts
and Scots fought a battle against the Angles and the leader of the Scots the
night before the battle said that if they were to win the battle then Saint Andrew would become the
Patron Saint of Scotland. They won and then the emblem of Saint Andrew, an X on
a blue background, became the flag of Scotland. November
30th is his feast day and it is celebrated worldwide.
